Making the civil nuclear sector safer from cyber threats: Insights from Dan Coats, Office for Nuclear Regulation

Growing concerns on the lack of cyber security maturity in the civil nuclear sector have led to initiatives to mitigate the risk, such as the Civil Nuclear Cyber Security Strategy, the first of its kind to focus on the sector. Ahead of Threat Intelligence and Incident Response, we had the opportunity to talk to Dan Coats, ONR Inspector – Nuclear Security, Civil Nuclear, Security Programme Cyber Security & Information Assurance Team, Office for Nuclear Regulation – the body responsible for the initiative mentioned above. He shares here his insight on the cyber challenges faced by the civil nuclear sector, what approach has been taken to undertake the initiative and what crossovers exist with the Bank of England’s CBEST framework.
